2010 West End Cup

December 20, 2010 8:56 am

Another successful West End Cup in 2010 – here is what Tournament Director, Justin McKenzie had to say about it:

Hi Everyone,
What a weekend, perfect weather, international players , superb tennis and a great turnout to watch our 3rd Annual Westend Cup.

Kicking off on Thursday Morning with a Pro Am followed by a Grasshoppers Junior tournament (5-9 yrs) in the afternoon, (with Heineken Open doubles winner Marcus Daniel) in attendance ,to sign some autographs for the kids, this was a great start to our annual carnival of tennis at Westmere Tennis Club.

With a quality field in both the Men’s and Women’s events the 2010 Westend Cup was always going to be exciting, filled with high quality tennis. With no fewer than 15 International players in the draw and many world ranked too, the standard was the best we have had in our event so far.

The women’s event was taken out by Bulgarian, Elitsa Kostova (World Ranking 230) over NZ/Thai player Katherine Westbury (World ranking 677) 6-2 6-3.  Kostova was made to work hard in her semi final against local player and one of our Westend Coaches Pavlina Nola. Now retired, Pavlina did reach number 68 in the world.

The Men’s Final was an exciting match up with Russian (waiting to be a kiwi) Artem Sitak , number 320 in the world , against NZ number 2 Rubin Statham, WR 445. Rubin played impeccable tennis to take the first set 6-2 but succumbed to a leg injury early in the second set. He battled on till the end of the set but the Russians experience meant he would not let Rubin off the hook. Rubin retired hurt at the beginning of the third set. A disappointing end but still a treat to see these world ranked players in action at Westend Tennis Club.

A special thanks to all those involved and we hope to be bigger and better next year.

Regards
Justin Mackenzie

Inaugural Grasshopper Tournament at West End Tennis Club

December 20, 2010 8:46 am

West End Tennis Club hosted its first ever Grasshopper Tournament last week in conjunction with the West End Cup.  Both events were a huge success and Tennis Auckland congratulate the club for staging these tournaments and providing competitive opportunities, not only for our best players, but also for those just starting to play the game.  This is what Tournament Director, Justin McKenzie, had to say about the Grasshopper Tournament:

“At 3.30 pm they started rolling in , rackets in hand, pensive looks on their faces, holding mums hand tightly… Yes, this was the first Grasshoppers tournament for many of the entrants.  ‘Where do I go’ , ‘Will I know anyone’, ‘My friends said they would be here’….  By 4pm all 47 children were registered on the court for a warm up with our own Heineken Open Doubles winner Marcus Daniel, and ready to embark on their first ‘real tournament’

As a lead in to our 3rd Annual Westend Cup , and my first Grasshoppers tournament, this was a huge success.  With Marcus and many other players from the tournament giving motivation and helping out , the kids were having a ball.  Lots of close games, sorting out the score and yes we even had to shake hands at the end of each match!  By the end of 2 hours in the sun, a goodie bag filled with Lego, Abes Bagels, Autographed Postcards from Marcus, stickers and key ball rings, smiles were everywhere.  After the prizegiving for the winners, we all retreated upstairs to get a well deserved sausage, drink, and watch the big screen with a replay of the last few moments with Marcus winning the Heineken Open.  I hope all left loving tennis, motivated and inspired to play our great game.

The rest of the weekend continued with the Senior Tournament with many of our grasshoppers coming down to cheer on their ‘new’ found tennis friends, ‘shouts of Go Rubin, Come on Sebastian’ rung out over the club.

Thanks you kids and parents for a great event.”

Well done Justin and to the entire West End crew!

Grasshoppers at Royal Oak Primary

December 15, 2010 11:08 am

Angela Swinkels and her team of coaches at the Royal Oak Racquets Club delivered a highly successful Grasshopper Programme to Royal Oak Primary School this term.
Read Angela’s comments below and then link to the blog site for more.  Tennis Auckland’s Mark Lewis congratulates Angela and her team on a job well done and is delighted that the school has chosen to participate in the Grasshopper Programme linked to the Royal Oak Racquets Club.  What a great way for primary school children to get involved in sport!

Over the last 4 weeks, the Royal Oak Primary School Year 3 and 4’s have been participating in the first Grasshopper course run at their school. Royal Oak Racquets Club Resident Coach, Angela Swinkels, went in with three assistants Scott Johnson, Harriot Dorrington and Georgina Hayr and took 8 classes of students (over 190 participants) through the basics of tennis using the grasshopper kits and modified balls.   All students had a great time and their hand/eye/ball skills have developed considerably during the course.   A  large number of the teachers became involved in the classes and as a result had their students out practicing with the grasshopper kit the school had purchased during the week.  This was great to see and it ensures the continuity and development of the students tennis skills.   Angela and her coaches are looking forward to going back into the school to complete the course with year 1 and 2’s as well as year 5 and 6’s next term.

Scarbro Caro Bowl – Parnell The Big Winner

December 15, 2010 11:05 am

It was two-from-two for the Parnell Tennis club as they won both titles in the Scarbro Caro Bowl over the weekend and can now lay claim to having the top teams in interclub in New Zealand.
Parnell have now won the men’s competition seven times in 10 years and the women’s eighth out of the last 10 years.

The women’s final was dominated by Parnell over Royal Oak for a 6-0 scoreline despite the top singles match going three sets as German professional Franziska Etzel overcame top Kiwi junior, Leela Beattie 6-4 5-7 7-5.

The second doubles match also went the full distance as former internationals Rewa Harriman and Amanda Trail accounted for Nicola Kaiwai and Rachel Dive in a third set tiebreak.
Former top 100 player Pavlina Nola easily won in the number two singles against  Kaiwai in the second singles and Harriman and Libby Scott defeated Angela Swinkels and Dive respectively at three and four.

In the men’s final Parnell came through on a countback 9-8 on sets over Campbell Park after another dramatic encounter between the two sides in front of a large and boisterous crowd at Campbell Park.
Parnell’s Rubin Statham lost in three sets to Argentine Gustavo Gomez in the top singles. While Mark Nielsen scored a win for Parnell as he beat Adam Thompson in three sets.

Campbell Park won the No4 singles as Robbie Cheyne defeated Anton Bettink in three sets and then Alistair Hunt dropped the first set in the tiebreak but then won the required set late at night for Parnell in the No3 singles against the other Argentine player, Marianno Pettigrosso.
Parnell had earlier won both of the doubles matches  as Statham and Nielsen teamed up to defeated Gomez and Pettigrosso in two tiebreaks while Hunt and Steve Downs had to play some top tennis to win in a third set tiebreak over Thompson and Cheyne.

With the doubles played first Parnell always had the advantage however Campbell Park showed plenty of resolve to fight back and can thank their Argentine players who have become a permanent fixture in the summer tennis season at the club. Having former Davis Cup player, Thompson at the club added depth to the team while Cheyne has been commuting from Wellington for matches.

For Parnell, former pro Mark Nielsen has had one of his best seasons, particularly in the past few weeks playing some of his best tennis to help win the matches which matter in the competition.

The majority of players from all teams now get ready for the New Zealand Reisdentials starting at the end of this week on the North Shore.
