Winstone Park Tennis Club 75th Anniversary Celebrations

“The Winstone Park Tennis Club celebrated its 75^th Jubilee over the first weekend in October. We started with a very successful mix and mingle on the Friday evening which was attended by over 110 past and present members. This was followed on the Saturday evening by a catered dinner which allowed people the opportunity to sit and chat. The weekend wound up with Sunday afternoon tennis for those who wished to participate and there were lots. And of course a traditional afternoon tea. The weekend provided lots of tales and the opportunity to renew many friendships. The success of the weekend was in no mean part due to the hard work of the Jubilee Committee.”

Grasshopper Tournament at West End Tennis Club

Justin McKenzie is calling for entries for the first Grasshopper Tournament at the West End Tennis Club.
The event is scheduled to take place at the club on Thursday 9 December from 3:45pm to 5:45pm using smaller tennis equipment specially designed to make the game of tennis easier for children to play.

In conjunction with our 3^rd Annual Westend Cup, I would like to invite you to our first ever grasshoppers tennis tournament. With specially designed nets and balls this fun event is a great way to put your practice into games.

Special Guest Marcus Daniel (winner of Heineken Open Doubles 2010) and other top NZ and overseas professionals will be on hand to motivate you , play some points with you and sign autographs.

With loads of prizes and giveaways this will be a great afternoon of tennis; a chance not to be missed.

Classy Field Confirmed For 2011

The full field has been confirmed for the 2011 ASB Classic featuring the Kia Motors Singles and Doubles and it features plenty of class, titles and Grand Slam finals appearances.

Top seed will be tennis superstar Maria Sharapova who has won three Grand Slams and been in one other final. She can also boast being a former world No1 player and has 22 WTA titles to her credit, including two this year Memphis and Strasbourg.

Countrywoman Svetlana Kuznetsova has won two Grand Slams (US Open 2004 and Roland Garros 2009) and been a finalist in two others. She has had a career high ranking of No2 and a dozen WTA titles.

Confirmed overnight is former world No1 Dinara Safina, making it a trio of Russian Grand Slam talent. Between them they have appeared in 10 Grand Slam finals winning five.

Grand Slam Winner Confirmed for 2011 ASB Classic

Two-time Grand Slam champion and former world No2 Svetlana Kuznetsova has be confirmed for the 2011 ASB Classic featuring the Kia Motors Singles and Doubles. Currently ranked at 27 in the world the Russian talent has 13 career singles titles and 14 doubles titles to her credit.

Grasshopper Record Smashed At Remuera

The Grasshopper Tournament at Remuera Rackets Club on Sunday November 14 smashed the existing record for the largest number of entries at one of these tournaments – by one!
Tournament organiser and self-proclaimed "best over 45 year old tennis player in NZ," Troy Turnbull, realised that he was equal with the previous record number of 72 just prior to the start of the tournament. Some quick thinking and footwork located player # 73 and the new record was established.
Grasshoppers is growing at a rapid rate nationwide and the record entry at Remuera is further evidence of this growth. All 73 participants enjoyed an afternoon of Grasshoppers fun in the sun and most of them will return for the next event at the same venue.

Editors note: Although Troy picked up the record for Grasshopper numbers he may have lost his self-proclaimed title of 'best over 45 year old in the country" after losing a marathon interclub match to 45 year old vet Jeff Sowter.
