Caro Bowl Tennis – Big Teams Look Dangerous Already

October 12, 2010 11:18 am

With round one of the Scarbro Caro Bowl tennis competition completed it already looks like a top-four, bottom-four in the men’s grade after some relatively easy starts for the favoured sides.  Parnell led by former Davis Cup players Mark Nielsen, Alistair Hunt and Steve Downs as well as the talented Anton Bettink all not dropping a set as they defeated Pompalier 6-0 in the men’s grade.

Remuera were also solid with their 5-1 win against an injury weakened Royal Oak.  Remuera dropped just the top singles where American coach Paul Koenke was out-hit by Aaron McDougall.  The remainder of the games saw Remuera win in straight sets.

Competition finals contenders Campbell Park who have Argentine players Gustavo Gomez and Mariano Pettigrosso as well as former Kiwi internationals Adam Thompson and Robbie Cheyne in their side routed newcomers Herne Bay 6-0 who will be hoping to have their full strength team available for next weeks clash with Cockle Bay who are also a new side.

The Herne Bay club has a strong social environment and if it can have full use of its side containing Kyle August, Geneio Zanella (from Brazil), Paras Thakur (originally from India), plus talented North Harbour junior Gideon Brink and maybe club coach David Mustard in doubles they could give the Cockle Bay side which contains former or current Canterbury players Andrew Batie, James Spence and Matt Meredith a lot of trouble.

Cockle Bay were beaten by an understrength Blockhouse Bay who were too strong, winning 5-1.  The one point for Cockle Bay came from Canterbury player Matt Meredith at No3 who beat Eru Lydon.  The remaining singles were won by Jackson Bodle, Marco Comuzzo and Haydin Joblin for Blockhouse Bay.

The big clashes of the second round have Remuera host Parnell and Campbell Park at home against Blockhouse Bay.  On each occasion the depth of the visiting teams will be tested as the home sides play all the way down the order.

The other second round match features Royal Oak having a visit from Pompallier who have former Davis Cup player, Teo Susnjak at No1. Both sides keen to gain some points after first round losses.

In the women’s competition defending champions Parnell were able to use four former professional players to account for Kohimarama 5-1. German No1 Franziska Etzel was too strong for Kairangi Vano who returned early from injury.  However Vano and Luci Barlow were able to gain the top doubles in the ties early match in a third set tiebreak beating Etzel and Rewa Harriman(nee Hudson).

Pavlina Nola, Harriman and Libby Scott were the other singles winners for Parnell.

Royal Oak beat Glendowie 6-0 without any loss of a set with top junors Leela Beattie and Emily Fanning in the top two spots while Pompallier with former Kiwi No1 Shelley Bryce (nee Stephens) led her team to beat Mission Bay 4-2.  Bryce won her top singles over Stacey Housley without the loss of a game and also combined with junior Yoanna Peshev for a doubles victory.

Remuera get their first taste of Caro Bowl tennis for 2010 as they play away to Pompallier.  Remuera should have Brittany Teei back from representing the Cook Islands at the Commonwealth Games, but she will be facing an in-form Shelley Bryce in the top singles match.  Mission Bay have a home tie as the ever-consistent and very strong Royal Oak visit.   Watching probably the two best junior girls in the country play in the form of Leela Beattie and Emily Fanning for Royal Oak is well worth attending this clash.  Kohimarama travel over the hill to Glendowie and Parnell have the bye.

Grasshopper Tournament at Herne Bay Rackets

October 11, 2010 3:02 pm

David Mustard and Jacqui Thompson organised a successful Grasshopper Tournament at the Herne Bay Rackets Club last week to conclude a Holiday Tennis Programme.
Almost thirty children fanned out on several Grasshopper courts at the club and participated in a series of five minute matches against each other.
Mark Lewis, Tennis Auckland Club and School Manager, was highly impressed by the activity on display and the professional way in which the tournament was organised.  The children adapted very well to the modified game and they were all happy to take a turn as an umpire between matches.

Congratulations to David and Jacqui for putting on such a great event and creating a wonderful environment for children to learn and play the game.

Scarbro Caro Bowl – 2010 Preview

October 5, 2010 10:46 am

Top tennis returns to Auckland this Friday night with the opening round of Scarbro Caro Bowl which features the best teams in tennis clashing for supremacy with the best players from around the country and a large amount of overseas influence too.
Close to 30 of the listed players in the eight-men’s team, seven women’s side competition have had ATP or WTA international world rankings.

The biggest change from the previous season is in the men’s competition where defending Caro Bowl champions West End decided to not put in a team, citing financial burdens, mainly as a result of the high player appearance fees. The surprise left teams scrambling to pick up West Ends players and at a late notice nearby Herne Bay putting in a team, which is looking a little weak, but at least prevents a bye.

Parnell will be the favourites with a first round clash against Pompallier at Pompallier. Parnell have listed a virtual all international lineup. Although it’s certain Rubin Statham will not play the first match as he is representing New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games. Kiwi No1 Dan King-Turner is ranked around 230 in the world and is unlikely to play, which means the bulk of matches will feature former top 200 ranked Alistair Hunt, the talented Anton Bettink and another ex international, Steve Downs.  Pompallier are headed by Teo Susnjak and the fast rising player, Adam Lee with Argentine Gustavo Perziano also listed.

Remuera have a solid side featuring American coach Paul Koenke.  What he lacks in size may be helped by his like of the astro grass court surface on the clubs home courts against Royal Oak who will be missing former Chinese Davis Cup player, Wei Wei after recently breaking his leg. Also in the Remuera team is former Davis Cup player James Shortall as well as Martin Colenbrander. Royal Oak have the talented junior Jaden Grinter in their side.

In other men’s matches the strong Campbell Park side host Herne Bay and Blockhouse Bay are at home against another new side in Cockle Bay.  Campbell Park have former Argentine pro’s Gustavo Gomez and Mariano Pettigrosso who were popular last year. They are joined by former Kiwi Davis Cup players, Adam Thompson and Robbie Cheyne to form a potentially winning side.

Blockhouse Bay could also be contenders if they can front with a full strength side. They have Russian-Kiwi Artem Sitak who is world ranked in the 300’s followed by Kiwi No2 Michael Venus and another Kiwi pro Marcus Daniell who won the Heineken Open doubles earlier this year. Jackson Bodle looks likely to be another vital member of the team.

Cockle Bay have club coach, Andrew Batie leading their side. The former pro is likely to bring in some of his ex-Canterbury friends to help his side stay competitive.

The pick of the women’s first round clashes should be between defending champs, Parnell and Kohimarama. Parnell will again be the title favourites with Kiwi professional and former national title holder Di Hollands should be available for most of the season. German Franziska Etzel was a top find for the side last season and has been ranked inside the top-400 in 2005. She won ITF Futures singles and doubles titles.

Forrmer top 100 player Pavlina Nola adds depth to the side as does former Kiwi No1 Rewa Harriman while Otago teenager Libby Scott will benefit from the experience around her. Former international Amanda Trail will be used for doubles.

Once again Scarbro Kohimarama will be a contender for a finals place, but they will need to have all of their players available and stay away from injuries. Kairangi Vano has had a WTA ranking and is still probably the hardest female hitter in the country. Briar Preston is 16 and ranked inside the world’s top-100 juniors, however she may be overseas during the season. Tracey O’Connor is a former professional and Luci Barlow gives the team plenty of depth with Heidi Stewart a much improved junior from the Waikato.

Remuera have the bye for the first round.

The competition runs from 6pm Friday 8 October until the finals to be held Friday 10 December.
