Tennis New Zealand Appoint New CEO

Tennis New Zealand has appointed experienced sports administrator Steve Johns as its new CEO.

Johns has had a number of roles within the sporting community and is also a former national sportsman. He comes from Surf Life Saving where he has been the CEO of Northern Region for the past six years. Previously he was the General Manager, Operations at the Millennium Institute of Sport & Health, and had also been a facility manager at a leisure centre in Auckland. More…

2010 Tennis Auckland Prizegiving Awards Results

sacha 4New Zealand women’s No1 Sacha Jones was named Tennis Auckland Player of the Year and Cockle Bay the Club of the Year at the prizegiving awards held on Thursday 13th May.

Jones, 19 reached a career high ranking of 157 earlier this year, winning four consecutive ITF tournaments and becoming the nations top player for the first time. She is currently recovering from an injury. The junior male player of the year went to Adam Lee, who is the national champion from the Pompallier club while Imogen Golder from Mission Bay who is now on a scholarship at Purdue University in the United States was the girls junior player of the year. Mixed Results for New Zealand Boys

AussieThe New Zealand Boys World Junior Team will play off against Thailand for the 5th to 8th play-offs at the Asia/Oceania Qualfying event in China.  After a win in their opening match against Uzbekistan, the team followed this up with a 3-0 win against Syria in their second pool match.  Their final pool match was against second seeds Japan who proved far too strong for the New Zealand boys winning 3-0.  Finishing second in their pool, the boys then faced top seeds, Australia in their quarterfinal match.  Aucklander, Rhett Purcell lost the opening rubber 6-2 6-4 against Australia's Chen Li Tu.  In the number one singles match Auckland's Alex Klintcharov played top Aussie junior Blake Mott.  Alex had a slow start losing the first set 6-1 but held an early lead in the second 3-1 before Mott fought back to take the match 6-1 6-4.  Alex teamed up with fellow Aucklander Niko Vulinovich in the final match but their Aussie opposition Mott and Li Tu were too strong taking the match 6-1 6-4 and completing a 3-0 win.

New Zealand Team off to Great Start

IMG_0436The New Zealand boys World Junior Tennis team have started well at the Asia/Oceania qualifying event being held in Anqing, China this week.  The all Auckland team had a 2-1 win in their opening match against Uzbekistan.  In the fist match of the tie, enduring 30 degree heat  Auckland's Niko Vulinovich lead 5-4 in his opening set before his opponent Jurabek Karimov found his rhythm and never looked back, closing out the match 7-5, 6-2.  In the second match New Zealand’s number 1 Alex Klintcharov faced Uzbekistan’s number 1 Rasuljon Ahmadaleiv. Alex found himself behind by a set (4-6) and needed to find a new gear to overcome his tenacious and competitive opponent.  After a medical time out, Alex almost looked like a new player. He won the second set 6-1 and fought bravely from 2-3 and a break down in the third set to win 6-3 and keep New Zealand’s chances alive.  With matches tied at 1-1 the doubles would now decide the tie. Auckland's Rhett Purcell partnered Alex Klintcharov shut out a dejected Uzbekistan team 6-2, 6-2.  New Zealand's next match will be against Syria who lost 3-0 to Japan in their opening tie.
