Battle For Semis In Scarbro Caro Bowl

November 12, 2009 10:29 am

Defending men’s champions Parnell have managed to slip past West End to take the lead in the men’s Scarbro Caro Bowl tennis while Royal Oak continue to dominate the women’s section looking towards the penultimate round of the competition this weekend.

Parnell jumped to first place after a 6-0 drubbing of Remuera, thanks again to Kiwi No1 Dan King-Turner filling in at the top spot for Parnell and defeating James Shortall in straight sets. The clean win by Parnell moved them one ahead of West End who were able to defeated Kohimarama without dropping a set.West End seem to have the best final round draw as they take on Royal Oak and should score a win, while Parnell will have it’s work cut out to claim a clear-cut victory over Campbell Park which will be the match of the round, being played at Campbell Park.

The Royal Oak women beat their nearest rivals, Kohimarama 6-0, although Kohi were without their No1 and two. Royal Oak have the bye in the final round, but their position for a home semi is totally assured. Kohi on the other hand need to gain a few points to secure their home semi when they face Pompallier at Kohi.Remuera and Glendowie will both be aiming for points in their clash to be held in Remuera while Parnell take on Mission Bay and can move into second if they can grab a big win. Grasshopper Challenger Series

November 3, 2009 3:34 pm

The 2nd Grasshopper Challenger Tournament, was held at Manukau Tennis Centre on Sunday 18th October, and was a huge success.
The boys and girls were combined to make a draw of 16 kids. A shower at 1pm, when the tournament was due to start, held up proceedings temporarily, but before long the first round matches under way with were underway on the synthetic grass courts.
The wind did not deter the competitors from playing matches in a good spirit. The consolation final was played between two 7 year old boys. Jono Fall (Manukau & Pakuranga) beat Matt Shearer (Manukau & Cockle Bay). The main draw semi finals were played off between Holly Stewart (Remuera) and Stuart Simmons (Manukau) with Holly winning the match 6-2 and in the 2nd semi final Tiana Windbuchler (Manukau & Cockle Bay) took on Taite Fullerton (Manukau and Karaka) where Tiana came through a marathon of a match the winner 6-3. The final saw Holly (8), who trains at Remuera Racquets against Tiana (9) who trains at Manukau Tennis Centre. This was a very tight match with some excellent tennis resulting in Tiana coming out the winner at 6-4. Thanks to everyone for their help and participation. We look forward to the next tournament at Scarbro Tennis Centre on the 15th November run by Bruce Dick (bruce.tennis@gmail.com). Manukau Tennis Centre will host another tournament on 24 January 2009 before school go back for the new year.
