The second round of Scarbro Caro Bowl tennis had plenty of expectation in the men’s draw with a replay of the 2008 final, played in front of a big crowd as Parnell hosted West End in slightly better weather compared to the opening round. Bolstered by Davis Cup player Oliver Statham and Alistair Hunt joining the side it was West End who were the favourites against Parnell who have the same tried and true team.
Statham again ended up wondering why Caro Bowl appears harder than the professional circuit as he and former South African pro, Wesley Whitehouse were beaten in an exciting match which they lost in a third set tiebreak against Matt Prentice and Steve Downs. Prentice also teed off on the ball on every shot to win the top singles over Statham as well.
The wins for West End came thanks to Hunt and Adam Thompson in the singles and Hunt and Mark Nielson in the bottom doubles with the overall score eventually coming down to a games countback after scores were level at 3-3 and sets at 7-7. West End won 71 games to 67.
Equal leaders with Campbell Park on 14 points, Blockhouse Bay used Kiwi pro Marcus Daniell to score a straight set win over Pompallier’s Nick Wiles in the 6-0 victory. Campbell Park found their two Argentine players Gustavo Gomez and Mariano Pettirosso to their liking securing a 4-2 triumph over Royal Oak who had Kiril Tcherveniachki return to their side.
In the other men’s contest Remuera gained a 5-1 win over the young Kohimarama team.
The women’s competition saw Royal Oak finish with a 5-1 score against Mission Bay dropping just the Number 4 singles. Remuera gained their first points of the season as former pro Shona Lee accounted for Pompallier’s Karina Bradnam in straight sets in her teams 4-2 victory.
In the remaining women’s contest Briar Preston and Tracey O’Connor secure most of the points for Kohimarama against Glendowie and now lead the grade on 15, one ahead of Royal Oak.
