Top Teams Battle In Caro Bowl Tennis
It’s tight at the top as only three points separate the top four men’s teams in the Scarbro Caro Bowl competition after four rounds. West End have now moved into the first place on 25 points, just one ahead of Blockhouse Bay and Parnell with Campbell Park on 22 and Remuera still in with a chance at the semis, four points back.
In the clash of the round West End took on Campbell Park and used their superior depth to come through as 4-2 winners. However Argentine’s Gustavo Gomez and Mariano Pettigrosso playing in the top two spots for Campbell Park proved valuable once again. Gomez defeating Adam Thompson and Pettigrosso having a three set victory over Mark Nielsen in a tough encounter which featured some class play from both competitors.
The two doubles victories and wins by Alistair Hunt and Teo Susnjak at three and four proved the difference between the sides.
As expected defending champs Parnell scored the maximum points over bottom placed Pompallier while Blockhouse Bay accounted for Kohimarama 5-1. The Bay side have made good use of young Kiwi professional Marcus Daniell who has yet to drop a match for his side. Daniell beat Dan Davies in straight sets in his latest contest.
Remuera remained in top-four contention winning 5-1 over Royal Oak. The Oak team gaining its point in the second singles as Andrew Allan beat Martin Colenbrander in three sets. The top singles was won by former Davis Cup player James Shortall 6-2 6-2 over Kiril Tcherveniachki.
The Royal Oak women continued to steam ahead in their competition with a 5-1 win over Glendowie with Leela Beattie winning 6-3 6-4 over Lucy Barlow. Royal Oak have 29 points, with Kohimarama second on 21 points after they won 4-2 against Parnell in a high quality contest.
Kairangi Vano lost the top singles match to German pro, Franziska Etzel while Briar Preston managed a good win over Pavlina Nola and Tracey O’Connor won in three sets against Rewa Harriman. Nola and Harriman won the bottom doubles for Parnell.
In the other women’s match Mission Bay had a strong performance against Pompallier to register a 5-1 win. Imogen Golder at No1, Waikato junior, Dana Gray and experienced Di D’Audney all scored straight set victories for Mission Bay.
