Busy Weekend at Royal Oak Racquets Club

Royal Oak boasts 7 of the 16 quarter finalists in their open tournament which is due to finish on Sunday afternoon.  In the mens draw Andrew Allan looks to be sharp form at the beginning of the season but will have to get past another loyal Royal Oak player, Bryce Hayr. 6th seed Scott Winnard takes on the up and coming young player, Marco Comuzzo and Jamie Eccleton will look to push the veteran, Steve Downs in his ¼ final match. Top Auckland junior David Clifford, will have a chance to test himself against former Davis Cup player, Adam Thompson.

In the ladies draw Tracey O’Connor and Abigail Guthrie have cruised through their matches so far and the remainder of the draw will see some interesting match ups. Leela Beattie, Royal Oak ’s number 1 Caro Bowl player will be looking to impress the local Club members this weekend as well. Friday night will see two of the mens ¼ finals along with a handful of consolation matches, will the balance of the ¼’s and semi finals being played throughout Saturday. Finals on Sunday are 12pm for the Ladies and 2pm for the Mens. 

Along with the Open, there is a D5 and below doubles tournament being played this weekend.  Entries close tonight at 7pm and if you are interested in taking out the $200 cash prize, email Angela on rorc2@xtra.co.nz to enter. 

All visitors are welcome to come along and watch and the Bar and cafe will be open for the duration of the tournaments. The Club is also hosting a major open squash tournament starting on Wednesday night so there will be plenty of top sports action to view at “The Oak” this weekend.
