Davis Cup Team Announced

August 27, 2009 5:11 pm

The New Zealand Davis Cup team in association with Greymouth Petroleum has been announced for the tie against the Philippines, in Manila 18-20 September. The team is: Dan King-Turner (world ranking 339), Rubin ‘Jose’ Statham (393), GD Jones (839) and Oliver ‘Mikal’ Statham (886).

The team is unchanged from the July line-up which defeated Indonesia 5-0 at the Perry Arena in Hamilton. The next Davis Cup match will be a bigger challenge for the New Zealand team, given the hot conditions in Manila. The team are keen to overturn their defeat from two years ago in New Zealand where the Philippines won convincingly in the semi-final of Asia/Oceania Group II. If New Zealand wins against the Philippines in the upcoming match, the team will be promoted to Group I in 2010.  Countries such as Korea, Thailand as well as Australia are currently in Group I. The team preparations begin in early September in Asia. Sebastian Lavie will join the team for the week in Philippines in a development role after competing in the US Open Juniors Tournament.
