Riki McLachlan Wins Auckland ITF Event

February 9, 2009 1:29 pm

The older of the brothers from Queenstown’s, Riki McLachlan, 17 beat younger sibling, Ben, 16 in the final of the ITF (International Tennis Federation) 18’s Summer Tennis Championship in Auckland in straight sets in stifling temperatures to claim his first international singles title.

Third seeded (Riki) at 98 in the world be the second seed, Ben with a world ranking of 90 by a score of 6-2 7-6(2) to claim the singles win after being too consistent from the back of the court and forcing errors in his brothers game.

The anger showed for Ben in the tiebreak as he lost his cool, but still shows plenty of potential for the future.

Riki managed to make the second round of the singles at the Australian Open juniors recently while Ben had a narrow loss in the first round.

Both hope to play the remaining three junior Grand Slam events this year with professional careers beckoning the pair who are coached by former South African pro Lan Bale.

The brothers McLachlan combined to win the doubles title in Auckland as well making it the third career doubles win for Riki and second for Ben. The easily accounted for the North Harbour team of Anton Bettink and Dan Davies 6-3 6-0.

The girls final title was won by Australian 15th seed Viktorija Rajicic who beat Japanese tenth seed Miho Kowase in straight sets. Rajicic also won the doubles playing with countrywoman, Molly Polak to defeat Kowase and Mana Ayukawa.

The next ITF junior tournament will be in Wellington this week.
