Scarbro Caro Bowl First Round Review

The first round of the Scarbro Caro Bowl tennis in Auckland proved that defending men’s champs, Parnell will once again be the side to beat while the women’s side from the same club looks like being a team which is also a title contender. In a battle featuring most of the current and past New Zealand Davis Cup team, Parnell led by Dan King-Turner at No1 defeated West End in a repeat of last seasons final 5-1. King-Turner beat Adam Thompson in three sets in the top singles while West End gained a match as former Kiwi No1 Mark Nielsen returned to tennis and had a victory over Matt Prentice who withdrew halfway through their clash as a result of an arm injury. Kia’s high-profile sponsorship for the Australian Tennis Open has now jumped the net…………..extending its support for our top tennis events, as well.  Both the ASB Classic women’s tournament and the Heineken Open for the men will benefit from the support of Kia Motors in 2009. Discussions with Tennis Auckland have resulted in Kia being appointed the Singles and Doubles Titles Sponsors for the ASB Classic and the Official Vehicle Supplier of the Heineken Open. 2008 Scarbro Caro Bowl Starts This Friday

The summer sport season gets underway this Friday, night (26 September) with the start of the Scarbro Caro Bowl tennis competition which is fiercely competitive and features the top players from New Zealand past, present and future with a few foreign players thrown in too. The eight men’s and eight women’s team competition can be played in front of big and sometimes raucous crowds as the odd personal grievances appear to be vented on court. 2008 Auckland Senior Spring Tournament

The Auckland Senior Spring Tournament being held at Scarbro Tennis Centre gets underway at 6pm on Thursday 4th September with Open Men’s Singles action.  The touranment continues over the weekend with finals being played on Tuesday 9th September.  Draws and first match times are now available and can be viewed here.

Marina’s Run At The US Open Comes To An End

The run of Kiwi tennis No 1 Marina Erakovic has come to an end at the US Open in New York. In a one hour and ten minute battle, Erakovic, 20, and Croatian doubles partner Jelena Kostanic Tosic were beaten 7-6 6-0 in the quarterfinals by tournament 10th seeds American Lisa Raymond and Australian Sam Stosur. Quarter-Finals for Erakovic

Aucklander Marina Erakovic and her Croatian partner Jelena Kostanic Tosic have advanced into the quarter-finals of the US Open doubles event with a straight sets win over Tatiana Poutchek (BLR) and Anastasia Rodionova (AUS) 6-3, 6-3.  Erakovic and Kostanic Tosic will face the winners of the match between the seventh seeded Bondarenko sisters from the Ukraine, and tenth seeded doubles veterans Lisa Raymond (USA) and Samantha Stoser (AUS).  Erakovic is the first New Zealand women to progress to the quarter-finals in a grand slam since Julie Richardson in the doubles at the 1994 Australian Open.
