New Zealand tennis No 1 Marina Erakovic has been involved in a big upset in the first round of the women’s doubles at the US Open. Erakovic and her Croatian partner Jelana Kostanic Tosic beat the tournament’s number two seeds Kveta Peschke (Czech Republic) and Rennae Stubbs (Australia).

The unranked duo won the match 6-4 3-6 7-5 in front of a big crowd with Stubbs strenuously disputing an ace call in the final game which gave Erakovic and Kostanic Tosic a match point.

She suffered her first-round exit when losing 3-6 6-7 to Frenchwoman Pauline Parmentier in the last Grand Slam tournament of the year. New Zealand tennis No1 Marina Erakovic has been drawn against a tough pair in the women’s doubles at the US Open in New York. Erakovic who has a current WTA doubles ranking of 109 is pairing up with veteran Croatian Jelena Kostanic-Tosic.  They face the second seeds Kveta Peschke(Slovakia) and Australian Renee Stubbs ranked three and four respectively in the first round.  The doubles has yet to be scheduled, but it expected to be played on day two of the event. In doubles in 2008 Erakovic  reached the final at the WTA event in Istanbul (with Polona Hercog of Slovenia) and won the title at S’Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands with Michaela Krajicek.

Erakovic has a first round singles match on the opening day of the tournament – early Tuesday morning (3am NZ time) against Frenchwoman, Pauline Parmentier.
