TENNIS AUCKLAND ANNUAL AWARDS

New Zealand tennis No1 Marina Erakovic was the expected overall winner at the Auckland Tennis Prizegiving held tonight (Thursday).  Erakovic has seen her ranking rise to a career-high 80 in the world after top results at the ASB Classic in Auckland in January where she reached the semifinals after beating top seed, Very Zvonareva as well as solid results at other WTA events in Memphis and Miami. Erakovic, now 20 started the year with a ranking of around 150. Erakovic is currently in Istanbul training for a Tier III WTA event which starts on Monday.

Sacha Jones, 17 won the junior player of the year (female)award after some steady results as a senior player including reaching the semifinals of a US$25,000 event in and making the quarters of the US Open juniors last year.

The winner of the junior player of the year (male) was awarded to 12-year-old Cameron Norrie from Bucklands Beach who has become a fast rising tennis star in both the 12’s and 14’s age group events around New Zealand and has already represented his country in two test matches against Australia.

The overall club of the year was Pakuranga with Campbell Park the junior club of the year.
