Davis Cup Action Comes to Parnell

Tickets for the Davis Cup tie against the Philippines over Easter at the Parnell Tennis Club are on sale now at Ticketek or at the Parnell Tennis Club.  If you’re a club member there’s a nice discount.  Three days of Davis Cup can be purchased for around $45.  There’s also daily tickets too.

It’s the first time a Davis Cup tie has been played at a club venue in New Zealand.  Situated in the Auckland Domain the club is over 130 years old and will make for intimate viewing for around 500 spectators.  Already the corporate boxes are sold out, however general seating tickets are still available.  Anyone who has been to the Parnell Tennis Club during the Scarbro Caro Bowl will know that the club has a great atmosphere and they’ll be plenty of entertainment afterwards as well.

The artificial grass suface at Parnell is something the Philippines players won’t be familiar with and could help the Kiwis secure an upset.  A good crowd right up close to the court will also help.

The Kiwi men are in good form at present with Dan King-Turner playing well in Australia, along with Rubin Statham in Australia and now Japan while Simon Rea has been in good form too, winning the ASB Pro Circuit title in Hamilton.

The Philippines have former American and a former top-100 player in Cecil Mamit who is currently in the top-200.  He will be remembered by some Kiwis as the man who beat Brett Steven in the first round of the Heineken Open in 1997.  The year after Steven had made the final.

The second player for the Philippines is likely to be Eric Taino who has been a top-200 singles player who is ranked around the 500’s at present.

Start times for Davis Cup are 11.00am on Good Friday 6th April for two singles matches, 1.00pm on Saturday 7th April for the doubles match and 11.00am on Sunday 8th April for the reverse singles matches.
