Upsets In Round Robin Make For Uncertain Caro Bowl Semis
The calculators are out after the conclusion of the men’s round robin in the Scarbro Caro Bowl. It appears that Pompallier’s late run of success helped them to take the equal top spot and finish on 43 points, the same as Parnell who had their second loss of their season, albeit on countback to West End. Blockhouse Bay ended in third on 40 points with West End on 37 in fourth.
If there are no countbacks or changes in the final points Pompallier will host Blockhouse Bay for the second consecutive week while Parnell will play West End again, but this time at Parnell.
The joint top spot came to Pompallier as a result of beating Blockhouse Bay who were under strength with No2 and 3 – Andrew Batie (illness) and Eru Lyndon (arrival of a baby). But in front of a large and vocal home crowd Pompallier were always going to be tough. James Shortall accounted for South African Brendon Curry in the top singles with every match bar the bottom doubles was won in straight sets.
With Batie and Lyndon back in the team there is no doubt the result will be closer. batie will play Robbie Cheyne in what could be an enthralling match at No2 while Lyndon who has been in great form this season will face Adam McNeil. McNeil steps into the third singles spot as a result of Jacob Olsen not being available. Pat Metham from Wellington, the lanky 18-year-old highly regarded junior will step in for the team again.
West End won on countback over Parnell by 72 games to 64 with a number of tight contests between players with big reputations. Austen Childs won the top singles in three sets against Adam Thompson, however MAtt Prentice served his way to a straight set win over Martin Colenbrander at No2 to even the overall score. At No3 Alistair Hunt gained a 6-4 7-6 win over his former davis Cup teammate, James Greenhalgh while Teo Susnjak made the scores equal with a straight set win over Steven Downs. The doubles were split as Childs and Greenhalgh beat Thompson and Hunt in straight but Prentice and Downs won in three sets over Colenbrander and Susnjak for Parnell.
West End will be dead keen to score a repeat of their victory, but winning at Parnell is a different story and done very rarely.
Ina bottom four match at Royal Oak in front of a large crowd of enthusiastic supporters the home team had Brett Steven in the top doubles against Herne Bay, although things didn’t quite go the way of the former top-50 player. Steven and Marcus Daniel were taken to three sets by Wei Wei and Jeff Birse. Eventually Royal Oak came away winners 4-2. In the other men’s match Kohimarama beat Remuera on a countback.
The Kohimarama women’s team staged an upset with a 5-1 win against defending champs Parnell at Parnell. The win means Kohi finish the round robin as the top side on 49 points, four ahead of Parnell. Kohi will host a semi against Mangere Combined and a final if they make it that far.
Kohi No1 Kairangi Vano scored a three set win against Dianne Hollands while older sister Varoma Vano won in three sets at No2 beating Niki Tippins. The only victory for Parnell came in the top doubles.
Royal Oak scored a 6-0 win over Papatoetoe to finish in third. Mangere Combined used their full strength side to secure fourth after a 6-0 win against Remuera as just one match went to three sets. The other match had Mission Bay gain a 5-1 against Pompallier.
The first semifinal featuring Kohimarama versus Mangere Combined will be a battle of youth versus experience. Kohi won their round robin clash but will need to be careful as Tracey O’Connor and Shelley Bryce are ex internationals and Luci Barlow at No3 is a real competitor as is Manumea Durie. But the teenage team of the Vano sisters, Siobhan Cavan, Briar Preston and Sarah Adams have youth and power on their side.
The other semi has Parnell at home against Royal Oak. Parnell will be the favourite but won’t be feeling comfortable after losing to Kohi. However they can feel satisfied in the fact they won 5-1 in the round robin over Royal Oak.
