Erakovic On Verge Of Top 200

Marina Erakovic is through to the quarter-finals of the US$50000 ITF Women’s Circuit tournament at Beijing, China.  Marina enjoyed a comfortable 6-3 6-2 win over Napaporn Tongsalee (Tha) in the first round, followed by an upset victory against third seed Meng Yuan (Chn) in second round play yesterday.  Her quarter-final opponent is former top twenty player Iroda Tulyaganova (Uzb) and, if Marina wins, she may just crack the top 200 in the WTA rankings for the first time.  Erakovic also advanced to the semi-finals of the doubles alongside her American partner Raquel Kops-Jones.

The NZ Funds Trans Tasman tennis tie is on this weekend at the Parnell Tennis Club.  The 50th Anniversary of the IC Club in New Zealand is also being celebrated at the dinner on Saturday night.  Frank Sedgman, Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open Champion and his wife are attending the match and dinner. Top seed Sacha Jones won her first round singles match at the ITF Thailand Open.  Sacha beat Jessy Rompies (Ina) 6-3 6-2 and plays Kanyapat Naratlana in the next round.

Marina Erakovic and Raquel Kops-Jones (USA) beat Bai (Aus)/Lu (Chn) 6-2 6-2 in a first round doubles match at the US$50000 ITF Women’s tournament at Beijing.  Marina plays Napaporn Tongsalee (Tha) in her opening singles match.

An old family favourite was today given a fresh lease of life with New Zealand’s first ever official swingball tournament launched by Auckland City Mayor, Dick Hubbard.  The ASB Swingball Classic will transplant this iconic summer pastime from the beaches to the schoolyard in an effort to find the best swinger in town, with the tournament open to all secondary school Year 9 and 10 students in greater Auckland. Top Seeds Play True To Form

Top seeds Devon Sgubin and Monica Chen lived up to seeding expectations by winning their respective age groups at the Auckland Primary/Intermediate Championships at Vodafone Tennis Park over Labour Weekend.  Sgubin won the Open Boys Singles by defeating Vincent Chan 6-2 7-5 in the final while Chen needed three sets to subdue second seed Olivia Isbey 6-1 3-6 6-3 in the Open Girls Singles final.  Full results are available in the junior section on this website.
